''If I'm out running and hit a red light, should I stop or jog on the spot?

Posted by Blitz Fitness Inc on Monday, April 9, 2012,
Neither. If you stand there, you risk cooling down, and if you jog in one place you just look silly. A smarter thing to do is do a dynamic stretch. This will keep your gluteus firing and ankles and hips mobile, both of which help prevent muscle strains.

The Truth About Drugs

Posted by Blitz Fitness Inc. on Friday, February 3, 2012,

Are generic drugs cheaper?

Not always, and not by as much as you might think. "If you check drugstore.com, the difference is huge--say, $30 for generic versus $200 for brand name," says Douglas Kamerow, M.D., chief scientist for RTI International, an independent research institute. "But if you have insurance, the difference may not be so big--maybe $3 versus $12." With some drug plans, brand-name meds may actually cost less than their generic equivalents. This happens, for example, when major ...

Surprising Facts About Abs

Posted by Josh Tanzola on Monday, January 9, 2012,

You Don't Need to Train Them Every Day-

If you perform ab exercises daily in the pursuit of a perfect belly, you could be overtaxing your muscles. Some train abs 7 days a week and won’t allow for any rest. That just damages the muscles. Focus on abs three or four times a week.

Abs Exercises Alone Aren't Enough-

It’s also important to mix things up: New research published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research shows that doing a routine of core-strengthening exercises alone won...

Although a stooped posture may seem to go hand in hand with old age, you can help prevent the characteristic rounding of the spine that is often caused by osteoporosis and the destruction of the vertebrae in the upper and middle spine.

So who wants a quick 10 minute workout for fat loss? Sorry, I was just joking! In reality, you cannot lose a lot of fat with brief 10 minute type workout sessions! However we all do wish for something like that and the sly fitness instructors use this to their advantage to fool others and make quick money. So please, I hope that no one who follows this site should ever fall for any such claims!

But what about those times when you were planning on doing a regular 45 minute workout, but suddenly...

McDonald's Confirms Its French Fries Are Made With Beef Extract

SEATTLE - Facing a class-action lawsuit from angry vegetarians, McDonald's this week confirmed that its French fries are prepared with beef extract, a disclosure the company said is not new.

Although the fast-food giant has been saying since 1990 that its fries are cooked in pure vegetable oil, company spokesman Walt Riker said Wednesday that McDonald's never said its fries were appropriate for vegetarians and always told customers that their flavor comes partly from beef.

Can chicken soup really cure a cold? I won't go so far as to claim it's a miracle healing tool, but I will say that a good chicken soup can boost your immune system and improve your chances of beating a virus. This soup is a fantastic weapon when a cold or a flu bug is knocking you around like a great Canadian winter storm.

VITAMIN IV THERAPY

Vitamins and minerals provide the raw materials necessary for our cells to function properly. Usually we can get the nutrients through our diet if we are conscientious of what we eat. However, sometimes even a great diet may not translate to proper nutrition at the cellular level. There can be many causes of this which may include: poor digestion, food sensitivities, chronic inflammation, poor immune function, or any sickness. A vicious cycle ensues – our cells are not healthy and they need...

Health Benefits
Salmon is low in calories and saturated fat, yet high in protein, and a unique type of health-promoting fat, the omega-3 essential fatty acids. As their name implies, essential fatty acids are essential for human health but because they cannot be made by the body, they must be obtained from foods. Fish contain a type of essential fatty acid called the omega-3 fatty acids. Wild-caught cold water fish, like salmon, are higher in omega-3...

CORE STRENGTH
A strong core—the muscles in your abdominals, back, and glutes—gives you stability, power, and endurance. "If your core muscles can't support your pelvis, it will drop, which causes your hips, knees, and ankles to lose proper alignment," says Michael Fredericson, M.D., a professor of sports medicine at Stanford University. "When this happens, you can't absorb forces appropriately, and your muscles fatigue quickly."

A number of supplements are great for packing on muscle. However, if you want to get lean and mean protein is great. You are more likely to get a leaner mid section with whey protein, and not one full of sugar (Myofusion is one of my favorites since it is sugar and aspartame free). Whey protein enhances fat-burning and decreases the manufacture of fat by the liver. Something simpler? try ingesting fish oil to enhance the efficiency of leptin.  Why do kettlebells produce results?  Because of the way you use them.  You don't "workout" or "train" with a kettlebell, you practice.  It's like practicing the piano - you try to improve your performance by refining your technique, learning when to work hard and when to relax - you don't just "go through the motions."  These concepts can and should be applied to all exercise but it's easy to be mindless when you're on a treadmill or exercise bicycle or swinging lightweight dumbells or pushi...

More recent studies found that creatine supplements increase muscle satellite cells, which increase muscle size and improve the capacity for protein synthesis. GM crops have proved their safety and worth over the seven years since they have been widely grown. However, organic farming exercises a zero-tolerance approach towards GM crops. Alcoholic Beverages - this seems like a no brainer, but many animals die each year of "ethanol" toxicity, the component found in alcohol
Apples, Apricots, Cherries, Peaches & Plums - not the fruit but the stems, seeds & leaves contain a cyanide type compound.
Avocados - avocados contain a toxic compound for dogs called "persin" which is a fatty acid derivative.
Baking Powder & Baking Soda - both of these leavening agents can cause ...

Karvonen Method

Definition:
The Karvonen Method is a method for calculating your heart rate zones for heart rate monitor training. It is more accurate than most methods because it takes your resting heart rate into consideration. Here is the formula: Maximum Heart Rate - Resting Heart Rate = Heart Rate Reserve You then use the Heart Rate Reserve to calculate your target training rates as normal.

Protein Timing.... Tick Tock

Posted by Josh Tanzola on Friday, October 16, 2009,

Protein, whether from your own tissues (e.g., muscle), from whole foods, or from supplements, all consists of amino linked together in chains called peptides or polypeptides.

Amino acids aid in repair, growth, and development of muscle tissue (which is why amino acids are called the building blocks of protein), and also do a lot more. The body, through assimilation of amino acids, produces over 50,000 proteins and over 15,000 enzymes that have far reaching effects in the body.

Green Tea Extract inhibits testosterone production.

Green tea extract is one of the best selling weight control supplements on the planet. Most studies show it decreases fat and promotes weight loss, so it is no surprise that it is popular with weight trainers. Brazilian researchers, in a study on rats showed that green tea extract suppressed testosterone secretion. 7 Muscle Myths

More Protein Builds More Muscle

To a point, sure. But put down the shake for a sec. Protein promotes the muscle building process, called protein synthesis, "but you don't need exorbitant amounts to do this," says John Ivy, Ph.D., coauthor of Nutrient Timing

If you're working out hard, consuming more than 0.9 to 1.25 grams of protein per pound of body weight is a waste. Excess protein breaks down into amino acids and nitrogen, which are either excreted or converted into carbohydrates and store...

Personal Training and Client Accountability.

Posted by Josh Tanzola on Wednesday, October 7, 2009,

When individuals purchase a personal training program, they do not walk away with a tangible object. What they are buying is a chance to reach a goal. Whether that goal is to lose weight, gain muscle, decrease blood pressure and/or cholesterol levels, the individual wants to get the most out of the training. And in order to do so, they must be accountable to their training.

Like most professions, each personal trainer has a certain way they go about their job. Different personal trainers follo...

Slow Lifting Builds Huge Muscles

Lifting super slowly produces superlong workouts—and that's it. University of Alabama researchers recently studied two groups of lifters doing a 29-minute workout. One group performed exercises using a 5-second up phase and a 10-second down phase, the other a more traditional approach of 1 second up and 1 second down. The faster group burned 71 percent more calories and lifted 250 percent more weight than the superslow lifters.

The real expert says: "The best...

Food during your workout

Particularly if the workout is lengthy, you should consume some simple carbohydrates, such as by sipping at a little juice or a sports drink.

Why do you need to eat during the post-workout period

First, a little explanation. Bodies like to be in a state known as homeostasis: nothing changes, everything proceeds nicely, no surprises, keep on keepin’ on. Bodies only adapt if they have to, because they’re thrifty and they don’t like to waste energy. In biological te...

As children, HGH makes us grow taller. When we reach our full height, however, this hor...

Just as there is the endorphin rush of a "runner's high," there can also be the valley of despair when something prevents avid runners from getting their daily fix of miles.

Now, researchers at Tufts University may have confirmed this addiction by showing that an intense running regimen in rats can release brain chemicals that mimic the same sense of euphoria as opiate use. They propose that moderate exercise could be a "substitute drug" for human heroin and morphine addicts.

On food labels, they base the percentages on a 2,000-calorie adult diet. So looking at the label above for two crackers, a grownup would see that they provide less than 1 gram of fiber, only 3% of the person’s daily needs. So that means he or she would have to eat other foods to get 100% of the fiber needed each day.

Similarly, the person would see that the crackers provide nothing toward the daily goals for vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, or iron.Food labels aren’t ideal for kids because t...
